Levantado como enclave frente a Portugal, fue entregado en el s. XII por Fernando II al obispo de Orense. Posteriormente perteneció a los Duques de Sinde, señores de Araujo. En 1704, en la Guerra de Sucesión, fue destruida la plaza.
Los enfrentamientos entre los obispos orensanos y los señores del castillo fueron frecuentes en el XVIII, provocando la subasta de sus piedras y su olvido.
