In Gomesende, the river Arnoia forms an impressive canyon when it meets the Sierra do Val, located at an altitude of 556 metres. At the beginning of the 20th century, a hydraulic canal was built, now in disuse, which fed the tin mining industry in the area. The route begins and ends at the Church of San Xoán de Escudeiros and follows paths surrounded by nature, offering a varied route around the Sierra do Val. Along the way you will be surprised by the unique orography, with spectacular views of the Arnoia river canyon, and the presence of religious monuments such as the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Val de Poulo. Along the route you will see historical remains, native forests and ancient structures that reflect the link between nature and the history of this region. TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT: - The route consists of two sections: Escudeiros - O Val (11 km), approved as PR-G 143; and O Val - Escudeiros (3 km), signposted with blue and white markings. - Drinking water in the village of O Viso, 8 km from the start. ELEMENTS OF INTEREST: The religious complex of Escudeiros, dated between the 16th and 18th centuries, is a point of high cultural value. The Arnoia river canyon, surrounded by a lush riverside forest, is impressive for its beauty. Along the route we find the traditional mills of the Pérez Pérez and Chancela families, as well as the historical hydraulic canalisation, the Peña dam and the mini-power station "A Bomba", all 20th century constructions. The Coto de Seoane and the Castro del Coto evoke remote times. In Viso, the Chapel of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias, its fountain, washing place and the House of Pepe Viso are outstanding. The Way of the Dead, which connects O Val with Escudeiros, completes a unique cultural experience. COMPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES: In Santiago do Viñal we find a beautiful viewpoint that offers spectacular views of the surroundings, accompanied by a picturesque hermitage, perfect for a stop for reflection and rest. The Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Guía, a place of great devotion, also stands out for its group of restored granaries, which reflect the ethnographic richness of the area. Finally, the Church of Santa María de Pao, an 18th century construction, adds a touch of history and religious architecture to the route.
