Salgueiro, the highest inhabited village in the sierra, at an altitude of 1,100 metres, was abandoned in the middle of the last century due to its harshness and isolation. It has now become an open-air museum with elements such as the communal oven, the mill, the stone threshing floors and the chapel. In the nearby peaks, the Pyrenean goat has been reintroduced. The old "camiño dos mortos", which connected Salgueiro with Prado, runs along the right bank of the Salgueiro Torrent, rich in flora and fauna. It begins at the Reitoral de San Pedro, ascending to the hermitage of A Clamadoira, with a viewpoint over the Limia. In Prado, the pontoon over the river Salas stands out, and then a path continues to the chapel of Salgueiro, the end of the route. It can start at the Reitoral de San Pedro or at Salgueiro, but it is advisable to do it going downhill. - The municipality offers taxi and transfer services. - From the Clamadoira hermitage, with a rest area, you can connect with the Torrente dos Muíños route. - Carry water and take advantage of the springs in the villages. - Contact the park office to visit Salgueiro. - On cold days, the village may be covered in snow. ELEMENTS OF INTEREST: The area of Salgueiro and its surroundings offer a rich natural and cultural heritage. The village of Salgueiro preserves typical elements of mountain architecture, such as the communal oven, the threshing floors and the chapel, making it an open-air museum. Ç Nearby, the villages of Agrelo, Picós and Prado stand out for their rural charm, with the Prado pontoon over the river Salas being an emblematic place. The hermitage of A Clamadoira, with a fountain and a rest area, is a natural viewpoint over the Limia Valley. The fauna and flora of the river Salas and the Salgueiro Torrent, together with the peaks of the Xurés-Gerês mountain range, provide a habitat for species such as the Pyrenean goat, the garrano horse, the wolf and the golden eagle. The Rectoral de San Pedro completes the route. COMPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES: The Gerês-Xurés Transfrontier Park is an ideal place for activities in contact with nature. The O Corgo Leisure and Sports Centre offers river beaches and a municipal swimming pool, perfect for relaxing. For sports lovers, there are cycling routes at the O Corgo Mountain Bike Centre and the Aviva Sport Centre in Maus de Salas, as well as kayaking and catamaran trips. In hiking, the routes of the Torrente dos Muíños, the reservoir das Conchas, Pitoes-Salgueiro-A Cela and the Salas Valley allow you to discover unique landscapes. Maus de Salas has an old quarry for climbing. The cultural heritage includes the Aula do Megalitismo, the foxo do lobo and the mámoas of the Valley of Death, highlighting the historical and natural value of the area.
